Personal Information: John Yarmuth represents Kentucky's 3rd district in the US House of Representatives. He was born on November 4, 1947 (age 71), in Louisville, Kentucky. Yarmuth graduated from Yale with a bachelor's degree in American studies and went on to attend Georgetown law. Before his entrance onto the political stage, Yarmuth worked as a writer, a publisher, a television journalist, the Associate Vice President of University Relations at the University of Louisville and a healthcare executive. He is Jewish and Kentucky's first Jewish representative.

Yarmuth was elected as the representative of Kentucky's 3rd district in 2006 and has been the only democratic member of Kentucky's congressional delegation since 2013. He votes as a democrat on most issues, voting with other members of his party in the house 95.3% of the time in 2014 with similar numbers in preceding years.
In 2006 Yarmuth beat out Amy Northup in the November general election for the 3rd district and took office in 2007. His campaigns feature themes such as the economy, education, energy, seniors, and veterans.
Yarmuth has been named chair of the House Budget Committee for the 116th Congress after serving as its ranking member for the 115th Congress. In previous years, Yarmuth has served on the budget committee, committee on oversight and reform, ethics committee and the committee on energy and commerce.
Yarmuth has sponsored or cosponsored 58 bills this legislative session.
He tends to have high ratings from liberal leaning independent interest groups, including a 100% rating from planned parenthood on abortion and reproductive issues and an 89% from the ACLU. In contrast, he receives low ratings from right leaning groups, including a 13% from the NRA.
